Fan Expo.

1 min read
Obligatory preface of journal entry with comment about how I have not updated this thing in ages.

So yeah. I went to Fan Expo. It was pretty cool. In totally shocking and by that I mean not at all news, I didn't actually cosplay any of the things I said I was going to. But that's okay because I pulled this out of my ass instead:

Proper pictures will come at some point maybe eventually. I didn't really do any shoots so I'm praying on hall photos at this point. Hah. I'll probably be wearing her again at PAX this year (I'm breaking my no cosplay rule okay). Speaking of which, yes I managed to get tickets. I had to buy four one-day passes mind you, and eight sets of them too for my fiance + friends but. I managed. Next year is going to be even more fun, I'm sure. 8|;

I Got A Journal

3 min read
What's a deviantArt? What's a journal? I do not know what these things are apparently.

Anyways. Hello. Trying to type up anything of significant length these days is tiresome for me, one because I'm lazy, and two...because I'm lazy. Who am I kidding here; when have I ever been much for updating this thing in a semi-frequent manner?

So what have I been up to in my absence between last May and now. My summer was spent working as a radio operator for an air tanker base in my hometown, which meant sitting around in an office all day doing nothing waiting for forest fires to start. Lots of downtime, which was boring, but lots of overtime, which was awesome for my bank account. Not so awesome for my bank account is the fact I've kind of dove head first into the magical world of K-Pop fandom (which I might have hinted at in the past) so spending money on albums and DVDs has been a thing I've been doing. It's cheaper than conventions and cosplay, I'll give it that, though it could be argued that the frequency in which things are released evens that out. I'm not quite sure (though I do know I've been spending way less money on a whole as a result).

I didn't do anything for Halloween because I decided too late what kind of costume I wanted to make, and well...I wasn't going out so what was the point. And we all know my stance on cosplaying at PAX already (if you don't, it's that I just don't do it), so any new costumes there were a no-go. This more or less left my fall semester rather uneventful, although I did do some travelling: once to Vancouver Island for my birthday to hang out with CanadianStrawberry, and again in November to go to BIG BANG's Los Angeles concert. Which was fantastic (baby) and definitely something I'll remember for a long, long time.

In terms of things coming up, I will be attending Fan Expo this spring. No Sakura-Con this year sadly, as I'm taking a break from going. Who knows, I may go next year but we'll see. Fan Expo is nice and local, and rather chill so it should be fun. Cosplay-wise I'm not 100% sure on what I'll be doing both days. My friend Taryn and I are planning Catherine costumes (her as Catherine, me as Katherine), but as far as a second outfit goes it's still up in the air. I'm considering finally finishing Bayonetta, seeing as I've been sitting on the finished wig for almost three years now. I'd have to make everything else from scratch again though so, we'll see. I'm only taking three classes this semester since it's my last, so it's definitely doable--the last time I tried to make her I was doing a full five-course load on top of practicums and working theatre shows. (Also is the issue of transporting it since I don't have a car. Good luck me.)

So that's what's basically going on, both in my life and as far as cosplay goes. Sorry it's so boring, I really did not do a whole lot last semester besides school. Anyhow, catch you all the next time I feel like writing something (so like a year from now maybe). o/

Hey yo what's up people. Again, I go something like three months without updating this thing. Whatever.

So Sakura-Con was neat. I might eventually do a report but it's highly doubtful at this point. I can proudly say I spent the entire weekend sleeping at least 8 hours a night WHICH IS UNHEARD OF. All my costumes were done before I went down to Seattle so I spent all of an hour working on extra little hand sewing stuff in the hotel room. I felt pretty awesome not gonna lie.

I also hit up Fan Expo in Vancouver, which was two weekends later. No cosplay, just hanging out. There were a few organizational kerfluffles, but given it's a first-year con I'll let it slide.

Next convention for me is PAX, which is a while away still and I don't cosplay at it so don't expect anything new from me until at LEAST the fall. I'll post photos sporadically over the summer as I feel. I'm up in the air regarding fall conventions still; I might go to Aki-Con if I feel up to it, but we'll see. I'm on my last year of school and I want to focus on getting everything good and done so I can be finally free. Sakura-Con next year is... unlikely. I've attended for the past six years in a row and have pretty much seen and done everything there is at that convention so it's gotten pretty stale. I'm pretty much only there for the company. Fan Expo I'll go to depending on the timing.

I've realized that I've come to a point with cosplay where I enjoy making costumes, I enjoy wearing costumes, I enjoy photo shoots, but conventions themselves have become rather "meh" for me. I suspect part of it is because I've been going to the same ones for the past several years, and my tune will change once I get a chance to change things up (soon Fanime... soon). But I don't know. Maybe I'm just getting old.

And also I realized the amount of money I save during the year NOT making a billion costumes I'm gonna wear once for maybe two hours at a con. Like, between the four I went to between September and April I made all of five new costumes. Two were mostly made out of fabric I already owned. One was entirely made out of fabric I already owned. That's a lot of extra cash heu heu.

The last time I posted a journal was October 27th last year. Uhh...

SO HI HOW ARE ALL OF YOU. I'm doing great, myself. Slowly coming to the realization that Sakura-Con is in just over a month and I've barely started on my costumes BUT UH STILL GREAT REALLY.

I've got three costumes (four if you count silly kpop shenanigans with CanadianStrawberry aheheh) planned:

From L-R: Princess of the Crystal from Mawaru Penguindrum, Rei Miyamoto from Highschool of the Dead, and SeeU from Vocaloid.

Oh? There's something strange about this list? Well that's because for the first time ever, I'm not crossplaying at ALL at a con!** OMG STOP THE PRESSES. Actually no don't, really. Call it getting in touch with my lost inner femininity or something. That or I realized there's only so much longer I can go on pretending I'm a twelve-year-old boy. Or that I have boobs. Or something.

**Again, I am if you count silly kpop shenanigans. I am going to be the shortest, derpiest TOP you have ever seen and it will be amazing okay. * ^ *;;

I'm also at looking at maybe modelling for the Chantilly/Atelier Pierrot fashion show, but that is entirely dependent on if I get off my lazy ass and take some photos of myself for the application and if they even accept me in the first place. No panel or skit contest this year, it's going to be a chill and relaxed con (or at least I'll try and make it be orz).

On a vaguely related note, I have started up a cosplay blog/tumblr/whatever! If you're interested in my progress and whatnot, please check it out: shibuyariver.tumblr.com

Anyways, gonna go back to (not) sewing and stuffing my face with Easter candy, see you all later~!

...what the fuck dA what is this new journal bullshit.

Now that my momentary shock has worn off, time to get to what I really wanted to talk about. So Yaoi-Con was a thing that happened. I would have posted a journal beforehand saying "omg I'm going to be there and this is what I'm wearing come find me!!11!" but I got lazy and then just outright forgot so yeah. It was pretty cool though, even if I did spend roughly half of it sitting in the hotel room watching TV and drinking lol.

Next con for me isn't until Sakura-Con which is what, a good six months from now? You'd think that's a lot but then January hits and suddenly that six months has turned into three and you're like oh shit where did all the time go. Or at least that's how it's like for me, I don't know about the rest of you. As of now I have no set plans? Other than finally .hack is going to happen (sob) and then whatever me and CanadianStrawberry are doing for the skit contest and then possibly Vocaloids because SeeU is adorable and I want to be her and dance to K-pop all weekend. :B Depending on what ACP is planning for events I might look at working for them as well but. We shall see.

No artist alley this year though. That shit was balls and I hated it. Maybe in the future when I'm less excitable by cons and actually have stuff worth selling (imo)? Idk idk.

Oh so I guess I can talk about new animu, since that is a thing I am watching now. For the record I don't normally watch anime, and 90% of the reason I actually managed to make it through some shows was because I watched them with CanadianStrawberry so with her not around it's a lot harder for me lol. I started up Guilty Crown, which is pretty cool. I have the third episode open in a tab right now actually. The plot is kind of generic? But it's pretty to look at and I can foresee it pulling some Code Geass-grade bullshit in the future so I expect it to get more interesting haha. Also character design porn, omg. I love them so much.

I'm really behind on Mawaru Penguindrum. I should fix that this weekend or something now that midterms are over. Hah. I also have a passing interest in UN-GO? I haven't gotten around to watching it though, so that is a thing I need to do. The synopsis sounded really interesting, and the designs are by... well someone I don't know and then Yun Kouga aaaaaaaaaa which is instant approval from me.

Um other than that I can't really think of anything else to talk about. I'm so interesting like that ahahaha. I'm not even working on any new costumes right now, I'm so bad omg. The last thing I sewed was a cloak for Harry Potter stuff at YCon? And then before that the last time I touched a sewing machine was Sakura-Con. Eh, once next month rolls around I might start working on Sakura-Con stuff. Emphasis on might. I am pretty lazy after all.
